Islam Shawky

Co-founder and CEO | Paymob

Islam Shawky is the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Paymob. While earning his BSc in mechanical engineering at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Shawky co-founded Paymob with fellow students Mostafa Menessy and Alain El Hajj in 2015 as a payments facilitator to fill the gap in digital payments in Egypt. His vision to build the infrastructure that powers the digital economy guides the company as it expands across the MENA region and beyond. Today, Paymob operates in Egypt, UAE, KSA, Oman and Pakistan and processes millions of transactions worth billions of dollars each year. 


Under Shawky's leadership, Paymob has become one of the fastest growing fintech companies in MENAP, serving 250,000 merchants, and securing a total investment of $68.5 million from investors including PayPal Ventures, Kora Capital, Clay Point Capital, Global Ventures, FMO, A15, British International Investment, Helios Digital Ventures and Nclude. Paymob has been recognized by Forbes Middle East as a Top Regional Fintech company for the last three years.


He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC) and is passionate about building innovative, enterprise technologies that drive financial inclusion in the MENA region.

  

Shawky was recognized as a game changer by Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2021 and named an Endeavor Entrepreneur in 2022.
